SIXTEEN

I had a new plan when we arrived at the asylum. I laid it out for Jack moments before we were to head inside.

“I want to find the doctor.”

Jack sucked in a breath through his clenched teeth. “How did I know you were going to say that?”

“You’re a mind reader obviously.”

“Or I just know you.” He made a big show of brushing my hair out of my face — even though I’d pulled it back today — and glanced around to make sure nobody was within eavesdropping distance. “How do you plan to pull this off without anybody noticing?”

“We have to search for him.”

“Yes, but ... you told Chris you wanted to go through the files. He’ll expect you to want to do that again.”

I’d already worked this out. “Once I explain how seeing the ghost last night has kicked my adventurous spirit into overdrive, Chris will be thrilled with my decision.”

“You’re right. He was confused about why you didn’t want to search yesterday. He’ll be happy you’re back on the team today.”

“I was never not on his team. The only person I don’t want to team up with is Laura.”

“Speaking of that, does she look a little green around the gills to you today?” He inclined his head to Laura, who was standing next to Casey. She looked unhappy.

“She’s probably hungover.”

“Too bad she didn’t call in sick.”

“If she had, we would’ve been stuck with Casey. It’s probably best that she’s here, at least if you don’t want to lose your temper.”

Jack scowled as he regarded my newly found brother. “I don’t dislike him,” he said. “I don’t want you to think I hate him, I just ... .”

“Don’t like him,” I finished with a grin. “It’s okay, Jack. You don’t have to like him.” I looked at Casey and frowned. “I don’t know if I like him either.”

“You don’t have to like him,” Jack reassured me. “There’s no rule that says you have to like your brother.”

“I know, but ... we share the same blood. That’s been confirmed by a lab. Doesn’t that mean I’m supposed to at least be able to tolerate him?”

“I don’t know. Does it?”

I hated it when he turned a question back on me. “I’m not looking for a therapy session,” I said. “I just don’t know what to think of him. He drives me crazy. He’s such a know-it-all.”

“He is that.”

“He’s a mansplainer to boot.”

“A mansplainer?”

“That’s what I said.” I refused to budge. “He listens when I have an idea, acts as if he’s entertaining it, but then he always shoots me down because he has a better idea. And he feels the need to explain why his idea is better. I can’t help feeling he wants to disagree simply because I’m a woman.”

Jack held my gaze for a beat and then shrugged. “I don’t want to make excuses for the guy ... .”

“Then don’t.”

He smirked. “He’s your brother, Charlie. On top of that, he’s your big brother. I knew a lot of guys in the military with younger siblings.
